Nursing & Midwifery Council

The NMC regulates nurses and midwives in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Islands and keeps a register of all nurses and midwives in the UK.

It is illegal to work as a nurse or midwife without being on the NMC register.

The NMC safeguards the public by ensuring nurses and midwives consistently deliver high quality healthcare, setting standards for education and practice, and proving that they fulfil our requirements for keeping their skills and knowledge up to date.

The NMC aims to inspire confidence by ensuring that the nurses and midwives on their register are fit to practice and by dealing swiftly and fairly with those who are not.

Trained in the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA)

If you received your initial nurse training in and you are a national of: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden or Switzerland, you are eligible to apply through the ‘EU route of registration’.

If you trained outside of the EEA but you are a national of an EEA member state, you may be eligible to apply through the EU route of registration. However, to do this you must have been registered and practising in an EEA member state for at least 3 years and be able to provide appropriate evidence. The rules around this are particularly complex, and you should get in touch with either our NMC Administrator or the NMC directly before you apply to discuss your situation.

Trained outside the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA)

To apply for registration with us, you must first be registered in the country you trained in and have at least 12 months post registration experience.

All non-EEA applicants regardless of where they come from are required to meet the NMC standard for English, requiring an international English language test (IELTS) score of 7.0.

The NMC require that all applicants meet the same standard in a system that is equitable, fair and non-discriminatory. Applicants from countries where English is the national language e.g. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USA frequently question this requirement however the NMC have no plans at present to waive the IELTS requirements for any non-EU countries.

Further information about the IELTS requirements can be found at:

http://www.nmc-uk.org/Registration/Joining-the-register/Trained-outside-the-EU–EEA/International-English-Language-Testing-IELTS or www.ielts.org

More detailed information for non-EEA applicants wishing to join the register can be found at:

http://www.nmc-uk.org/Registration/Joining-the-register/Trained-outside-the-EU–EEA

You should be aware that you will, separately, be required to meet the full requirements of the UK’s immigration processes.

Overseas Nurses Program (ONP)

Provided you meet the minimum standards to be accepted on the NMC register, as a nurse trained outside of the EEA you will be required to undertake the Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) before your final stage of registration.

The ONP assesses your ability to practice in the UK healthcare environment. This consists of an ‘academic module’ of 20 days protected learning time (usually involving just 3 days of classroom attendance) plus, where applicable, a period of supervised practice.

Your decision letter will confirm what parts of the programme you must undertake.

If you have had educational and practical experience in your home country that closely matches UK requirements, you may only have to undertake the academic program.

As a general rule, nurses from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USA are often required to complete only the academic module.

Practical Advice for healthcare professionals travelling the world

Travel is exciting, but there are many pitfalls for the unsuspecting traveller, especially if you are inexperienced.

The Medic International Team has vast experience in supporting candidates in relocating to the UK.

When you are in the early stages of information gathering you need clear, accurate information on which to base the decisions you make, from an experienced team you can trust.

We recommend you consider some or all of the following questions:

  • Is my timescale for travelling adequate to ensure I am able to obtain professional registration and entitlement to undertake employment?
  • Do I need a medical, blood tests or inoculations?
  • What fees are associated with my travel plans? How much are they? Will the agency or hospital help with these?
  • Am I eligible for entitlement to undertake employment in the UK? What visa options do I have?
  • How long can I stay?
  • Will I need a criminal records check from home, as well as one from the UK?
  • Will there be anyone to help me with my registration and visa processes?

On the job hunt…

A change in your career can be daunting at any time, especially when this involves the cultural adjustment of a new country…

  • Think about what you want out of your new job; what is the most important motivation? e.g. the stability of a permanent job, maybe in a well known UK hospital or the flexibility for more travel.
  • Be open minded about other options but do consider each one carefully; e.g. London may be the only city you know of, but certainly not the only UK city worth living in!
  • Ask to be put in touch with other healthcare professionals from your country who have lived and worked in the areas on offer.
